Frequently Asked Questions

Our philosophy

This organization was founded in the belief that the study of complex systems can have wide reaching implications for future attempts to dream up and bring about a better world.

Our goal

Without professing to know specifically what 'social justice' might mean, and composed of members with varied backgrounds and beliefs, our goal is to find ways to link the study of complex systems with people in varied lines of work - academics, activists, researchers, policy-makers, scientists, educators, journalists, etc. - who feel that the study of complex systems can help give insight into what might produce a better world. By bringing together those looking for information, papers, opportunities for collaboration, new opinions or insights, new tools and methodologies, and those who are simply curious, we hope to bring the insights of complex systems study to any and all working to make a better world for tomorrow.

Who we are

The founding members dreamed up this project at the Santa Fe Complex Systems Summer School. More specific information can be found here.

Complex systems

Complex systems can be found all over the place in nature and society, for example in ant colonies, locust swarms, eddies in streams, and even the stock market. While a complex system may seem complicated, people have a specific idea in mind when talking about a complex system (that isn't just complicated). To understand the difference, we've put together an overview of complex systems here.
